![]() | Seeking Natural Preservatives for Beverage Applications |
PepsiCo Global Beverages is seeking natural preservatives/antimicrobials for beverage applications. Specifically, they are interested in novel/new ingredients that were not available in the past for beverage systems. A directional cost target in the range of $0.02 to $0.05 cents per serving will be acceptable. The project scope includes non-alcoholic beverages, both carbonated and non-carbonated. |
![]() | Seeking Technology for extraction/limiting absorption of oil/hydrophobic fluids |
New technologies/IP that identify new technologies for oil extraction or preventing absorption of lipids in a porous matrix e.g. potato chips. These technologies can be outside of the food industry such as pharmaceutical, petrochemical to enable oil/hydrophobic fluid removal/reduction. Key areas of focus: 1) Tech limits absorption of hydrophobic fluids (e.g. high temperature post frying to promote oil drainage) 2) Tech that extracts hydrophobic fluids (e.g. steam stripping, centrifuge, super-critical CO2 extraction, ultrasonic) 3) Tech that prevents creation of a porous matrix when exposed to thermal energy (e.g. (pre-treatments such as pulse electric field)) |
![]() | Seeking Free Water Carry-Over Measurement |
To identify a measurement technique that can robustly and accurately quantify the amount of Free Water carryover (FWCO). Substantial quantities of water are used during the potato washing and slicing processes of PC production. Techniques are used to remove free water carryover (FWOC) before entering the fryer. Any excess water remaining, and water associated with the potatoes is released through the stack during frying. Whilst there are current techniques in place to remove the water used in wash and slice operations being carried over into the fryer, it is not 100% efficient and improvements are being investigated. It is estimated that FWCO can contribute up to 10% of the heating load required. Being able to further reduce the amount of water that is carried over by even a few percent will lead to significant reduction in energy requirement for the frying process and, in turn, reduce GHG emissions. To be able to determine the amount of water that is carried over a robust measurement technique is required. |

![]() | Material capable of determining copper in must samples |
Researchers from the University of Burgos have developed a polymer that is capable of interacting with copper. In this context, it has been verified that, using this material, the concentration of copper in must samples can be determined quickly and easily. |
![]() | Circular RNA biomarkers for heart failure diagnostics |
Circular RNAs are a class of noncoding RNAs covalently closed by a back spicing event, making them protected from degradation by exonuclease. They are tissue- and disease-specific and are detectable in the blood. These properties confer circRNAs with valuable potential as disease biomarkers for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The Cardiovascular Research team of the Luxembourg Institute of Health leaded by Dr Yvan Devaux has discovered and patented hundreds of circRNAs detectable in the blood and associated with cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure. Heart failure affects more than half of the population over 65 and represents an enormous financial burden to the society. Circular RNAs can be measured in a highly specific manner using sequencing, methods based on probe hybridization, or quantitative PCR with divergent primers. They have potential to be used in diagnostics tests, companion diagnostics or, being involved in disease development and progression, as therapeutic targets. |
